Bolshie clothing is where you can buy clothes with attitude, and our attitude is that organic, fairtrade and recycled is best - for people and for planet.
- Why Organic? Since the 1930′s cotton production has been tripled due to the high use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. It has been estimated that 3,000,000 people suffer the effects of pesticide poisoning each year. The chemicals poison the workers on the farms and the land itself resulting in lower soil fertility, less biodiversity and water pollution. Wool also involves the use of pesticides harmful to farm workers and water supplies. Many dyes are also dangerous to workers and the environment.
- Why Fairtrade? The clothes we buy on the high street manufactured outwith the UK are often made under completely unacceptable conditions, where workers work long hours for low pay with no health care provision and no unions. Workers have sometimes been found to include children who have no access to education.
- Why Recycled? Approximately 10% of UK domestic waste is unwanted textiles, clothes and shoes. Only around 25% of this is currently recycled, the rest ending up in landfill and incinerators.
